Jailbreaking the iPhone 3G in Canada – what happens when…
Everyone seems to have their advice with jail breaking an iPhone 3G. This is of course only a little document talking about doing such a thing out here in Canada.
First and foremost, you’ll need to download the infamous QuickPwn which can be found here or here, there are many other sources. But those I’ve found to be the most reliable.
Like an impatient idiot, rather than extracting the executable file directly to my hard drive (and reading the “Read me” file), I tried running it from the .zip If you do that, it won’t work. Point blank. So extract the file onto your computer. You may need to update Microsoft .net frameworks if the program doesn’t run properly… I had to do that, and it’s very simple. Visit Microsoft.com and search for the applicable software. Once you’ve downloaded it for free and installed it, you’re good to run the program.
Please note; this is an account from a Jailbroken iPhone using firmware 2.1
Also, be aware that I’ve heard horror stories of contact information and photos going missing, so back them up just to be safe.
Now why would you want to Jailbreak your phone? Well, there are a number of reasons. Firstly, I’ve noticed that the battery life definitely feels as if it’s increased. The Safari browser opens a lot faster and you’re able to get a lot of Open Source applications through Cydia. Applications including an alright camera phone (although you can’t email the videos and unless you’re viewing limited movement, it doesn’t work too well), a handy bright flashlight and a bunch of other helpful programs.
However, the negatives seem almost more dominant. Your phone (with 2.1 broken anyway) lags. People argue that this is only the case if you have Winterboard installed, but I’ve never seen or used Winterboard and most of my originally speedy apps have slowed down. Text messaging takes noticeably longer to load, as does the Calendar, the clock and some of the iTunes App Store downloads.
It looks as if jailbreaking isn’t the way, though I’ll be tweaking more to see if I can notice improvements. But if I don’t find anything worthwhile, I may have to go back to just the firmware and move up to firmware 2.2
